Parents and Professionals: Is Poor Mental Health Contagious?

If it is possible that children learn everything they know from the adults (parents and teachers) who interact with them, is it possible that they can also take on board mental health issues of others around them?

Often self-harm issues around young people come in clusters – it’s as if they discover the coping mechanism collectively but the reality is it is influence. We are beings that are influenced by others and we influence others too.

Knowing this to be the case, should those who are in a position of influence address their own mental health problems, even if they believe they are good at disguising them from the young people they work with?
